Man Freed After Killing Wife in Sleep
Hubli / London: A British man who said he strangled his wife during a nightmare about fighting off an intruder has been found innocent in her death. Prosecutors had originally asked a jury to find Brian Thomas not guilty by reason of insanity, which could see him sent to a psychiatric hospital. But they withdrew the case against him on Friday, and said expert opinion was that hospitalization was not appropriate. What a decision by London high court. Can you imagine what could have happened if some husband in India would have killed his wife in his sleep when his mind had no control over his actions? First the media under the leadership of Barkha Datta of NDTV and Sagarika Ghose of IBNLive would have launched debate and attack against whole husband kind of India. There would be at least 10-12 agitation marches by women associations in and around Mumbai and Delhi and no doubt they would burn at least 100 dozens of candles at India gate demanding for the justice to the deceased woman. The whole women kind would unite under the same banner and demand for the harsh punishment for the husband. Exclusive shows and expert opinions will be gathered in the media. Suddenly from no where wife’s relatives would pop up in front of the camera and would deny that they never heard about husband’s sleep nightmare disease and it is all fabricated and they would demand strict action against him.
Earlier Thomas had accepted he had killed Christine, his childhood sweetheart and wife of 40 years. The Thomases were on holiday in their camper van in July 2008. After having their sleep disturbed by cars racing nearby, Brian Thomas had a nightmare that someone was breaking into the van. The court was told that Brian Thomas suffered from a long-term sleep disorder and was in a state of automatism where his mind had no control over his body when he strangled Christine, with whom he had two daughters. Sleep experts say that fewer than 50 such instances had been recorded worldwide so far. High Court Justice Nigel Davis called Thomas a “decent man and devoted husband” and said he understood that the 59-year-old would feel guilty. But “in the eyes of the law, you bear no responsibility for what happened,” Davis said.
Now we all know the condition of husbands in India. Every husband is insane in one or the other way right from the day one of his marriage. Some admit and some does not. And no doubt many of us have felt deep in our mind to strangle our partner at least once in a life time. But unfortunately even in our sleep we fear our wife and wife has remained nightmare for us. Where is the question of killing her? We often get nightmare of getting killed by our wife. We all know that we are not such lucky to have disease of sleep disorder and we would never dare to do that what Brian Thomas did and more over in our judiciary we don’t have jury system where in they understand the husband’s problem and let him walk freely stating that he has sleeping disorder. And more over Indian husband hardly gets orderly sleep forget about sleep disorder. Is not it?
